Bright Spots 2020: STEM Teacher Pathway Program

Monterey County faces an urgent need for qualified math and science teachers, especially in our rural schools. To increase our local supply of talented STEM educators, CSUMB is partnering with Monterey Peninsula College, Hartnell College, Cabrillo College, and the Monterey County Office of Education to build a pathway for local STEM majors to become middle and high school math and science teachers.

CSUMB, MPC, and Hartnell will work together to recruit students in STEM fields to enter the teacher pathway, providing them with social supports, research opportunities, early teaching experiences, and scholarship aid. Future teachers will learn and put into practice cutting edge STEM teaching practices that engage students in deep, hands-on learning.

Each campus is aiming to recruit 10-20 of them to become teachers. Once the program is implemented, the pathway will supply 20 highly-qualified STEM teachers for middle and high school each year.
