Goal 1: Early Care & Education
Only 27% of children 0-5 have access to full- or part-day transitional kindergarten or a licensed child care space. With a focus on communities that have the highest need for additional licensed care – subsidized care for low-income families in particular – we strive to increase the number of child care spaces available for families where it will make the most difference for the well-being of children.
Goal 2: Kinder-Ready

About one in four children are socially and emotionally ready for Kindergarten. Overall, children of low income families and children of color score lower in readiness than children of non-low income and white children. While aiming for universal improvement, we focus our strategies on system improvements that will support children that need it most.
Goal 3: Language & Literacy

There is an equity gap of 34% between African American and white students and a difference of 31% between Latinx students and white students on 3rd grade reading and writing tests scores. We have the possibility to provide equal learning opportunities for all students and to create customized solutions to meet students’ needs.
Because early literacy impacts all subsequent goals, it is essential that we work to close the equity gap.
Goal 4: Critical Thinking

There is an equity gap of 54% between African American students and Asian students and 46% between Latinx students and Asian students on 8th grade math test scores. Current practices and differences in opportunity are not meeting the needs of these students.
Critical thinking is an essential 21st century skill, and we must work to ensure all students have the opportunity to develop the skills they need to be successful in their future careers.
Goal 5: Youth Development and Engagement

Despite an 8% reduction in suspension rates for African American students, the suspension rates are double for Latinx and African American students compared to White students.
We must work to ensure all students have the supports they need to succeed.
Goal 6: College or Career Ready

There is an equity gap of 38% between Latinx and Asian students and 32% between African American and Asian students in A-G college course completion.
We must work to ensure all students complete A-G courses during high school so that they have the most options available to them after high school.

There is a 15% enrollment equity gap between Latinx and Asian students. While Asian college enrollment has increased by 8% over the past two years, African American enrollment has declined by 4% and White and Latinx enrollment has basically remained flat.
In order to ensure a more vibrant and prosperous Monterey County, we must work to ensure that 60% or more of our students are completing a college degree or credential.
