Bright Spots 2020: Bruce W. Woolpert Algebra Academy

The Bruce W. Woolpert Algebra Academy began in 2010 when the late president of Graniterock Bruce Woolpert and Kevin Jeffery joined with CSUMB professor Hongde Hu to expand eighth graders’ knowledge and love of math. Eighth-grade math, and especially algebra, is a key gateway for completing the higher levels of math required to be successful in high school and college. Students attend a summer immersion program taught by university professors, are supported with school-based math clubs, and go on field trips and learn how science and math are used in the workplace. The goal is that students will learn to love math and see how mastery of math can be the ticket to success in higher education and business or technical careers.
