The Monterey Institute for English Learners (MIEL) was established in 2018 to promote equitable and effective practices for educators serving English Learners in the greater Monterey County area. Through partnerships with local schools and districts, MIEL is researching best practices for working with English Learners, providing professional development for current and future teachers. Over 60% of our students begin kindergarten as English Learners – the highest rate in California. If we want every child to read on grade level, supporting the language development of English Learners will be critical. MIEL is a new resource to help our community do this important work together.
